The Feasability of Reflexive Control in Transfemoral Prostheses
نویسنده
چکیده
In daily life of a transfemoral amputee (TFA) a stumble or a fall is not uncommon, mainly due to the lack of feedback and control of their prosthesis. Although intelligent knees are now available, proprioceptive feedback and control over the lower leg is needed. Using muscle activity (EMG) as control input and providing artificial feedback is a concept already seen for upper extremity prosthesis, but not for the lower extremity. Ideally this feedback also triggers the reflexes of the prosthetic user, for the prosthesis to become second nature to the user. This article will address the allowed time delays in a system where reflexes and EMG are used to control a transfemoral prosthesis. The response to a kneeunlock was analysed in a modeling study, including the reflex loop and EMG control, to determine the maximal time delays which still allow a stable control of the knee.

Conception, design and development of a low-cost intelligent prosthesis for one-sided transfemoral amputees
Introduction: Modern transfemoral knee prostheses are designed to offer comfort and self-confidence to amputees. These prostheses are mainly based upon either a passive concept, with a damping system, or an active computational intelligent design to control knee motion during the swing phase. In Brazil, most lower extremity amputees are unable to afford modern prostheses due to their high cost....
متن کاملAssessment of aerobic capacity and walking economy of unilateral transfemoral amputees.
BACKGROUND Studies of the maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) of transfemoral amputees have mostly used protocols that activate a relatively small muscle mass. Consequently, transfemoral amputee VO(2max) may be systematically underestimated, and the validity of these test protocols is questionable. OBJECTIVES (1) Investigate validity and reliability of a VO(2max) walking protocol and (2) compare...
متن کاملVibrotactile evaluation: osseointegrated versus socket-suspended transfemoral prostheses.
This study investigated detection thresholds of vibrometric stimuli in patients with transfemoral amputation supplied with osseointegrated (OI) and socket-suspended prostheses. It included 17 patients tested preoperatively with socket-suspended prostheses and after 2 yr with OI prostheses and a control group (n = 17) using socket-suspended prostheses, evaluated once. Assessments on the prosthet...
متن کاملMechanical Engineering Control Methodologies for Powered Prosthetic Interventions in Unilateral and Bilateral Transfemoral Amputees
This dissertation describes the development and testing of control systems for powered transfemoral prostheses. The work is divided into seven chapters, with five distinct contributions. Chapter I provides introductory material, background, and some of the theoretical motivations behind the work. In Chapter II, a finite statebased locally passive impedance controller is described based on previ...
متن کاملEffect of Asymmetric Knee Height on Gait Asymmetry for Unilateral Transfemoral Amputees
Transfemoral prostheses have traditionally sought to emulate symmetry in their designs. Using a symmetric prosthesis for a physically asymmetric unilateral transfemoral amputee typically causes asymmetric gait patterns. This research study investigates the effects of prostheses with lower knee heights than the intact knee and a pilot study of the combined effects of adding distal mass with lowe...
